Northern Cardinals epitomize bright birds found in the eastern United States. It leads all birds as being the state bird of seven states in the nation, followed by Western Meadowlark at state bird of 6 states.
It is a defining member of the Cardinalis genus with a whopping 19 lesser known subspecies comprising the genus. Unmistakable when spotted in trees and shrubs and a common attendee at feeders across the eastern United States.
